PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The extensive renovation of Bass Circle Apartments, an affordable housing development, illustrates Greening Urban, LLC’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions. The location of this project, an economically disadvantaged area with poor quality soils, presented several challenges to the extensive site and building renovations. Innovative solutions, and strong working relationships with DDOE, allowed us to incorporate a total of 67 rain gardens and bioretention areas to keep stormwater onsite. Demonstrating a commitment to forward thinking, the site was designed to infiltrate 1.2 inches of rainfall and incorporated additional management techniques to address the possibility of a redundant storm event—all in advance of upcoming changes in stormwater regulations. Greening Urban served as the Civil Engineer, on this urban revitalization project. The District is excited about Bass Circle as a model of smart sustainability integration; this project illustrates that even small projects can still have a large beneficial impact on the neighborhood, environment, and Anacostia River.
